Venial and Venal

Venial, from Latin veniais means something is forgivable, most commonly used in venial sins. Venal is quite different. Coming from Latin venal it means something can be bought, most commonly used to describe a corrupt government.

In the United States it is toward; in the UK it is towards. Both are fine anywhere.
