Although I enjoy listening to Queen and some of the Beatles’ songs, there is not much music composed after the nineteenth century that I like. Sorry, but there it is. Beethoven moves me, and Mozart is almost always sublime and hummable. But the paragon must be Johann Sebastian Bach. I don’t favor him because of his Lutheranism and the many songs of worship and the cantatas. It is the quality of the music itself that points me toward the perfection of heaven.
And of his best, the Brandenburg Concertos must be at the top of the list. And, of those, the Allegro of the 6th, to my ear and heart, is the best thing he ever wrote.
